Custom made eye prosthesis: An accurate solution for anophthalmic socket

Dear Editor,

A prosthetic replacement of the lost eye is a treatment of choice to bring an individual to return to his normal life. When time and cost factor is taken into considerations stock, ocular prosthesis can be given to a patient.[1] There are disadvantages with a stock ocular prosthesis, such as ill-fitting, improper shade matching. A custom-made ocular prosthesis increases the adaptiveness, movement of the eyeball and exact color match of the iris and sclera with the adjacent eye can be achieved.[2],[3],[4]

This article describes a cost-effective method for the fabrication of custom-made eye prosthesis. Make the wax pattern for the corneal button of the same size as the contralateral iris of the patient. Do the flasking [Figure 1]a and dewaxing of the prepared wax pattern mold. Pack the mold with the clear heat cure clear acrylic resin and cure it (DENTSPLY, USA) [Figure 1]b. Retrieve the corneal button from the mold and do the finishing and polishing [Figure 2]a. The patient's iris was made after painting on a black acetate disk with acrylic paints [Figure 2]b. The color and accuracy of the painted iris disk were checked with the contralateral eye. Allow the iris disc to dry. A drop of glue was placed on the iris disk, and the corneal button was gently slid on top of the iris disk to avoid air entrapment and kept it for drying [Figure 2]c. Eye shell was fabricated with tooth colored acrylic resin (DPI, Mumbai, India) [Figure 3]a and the assembly of corneal button with painted iris disk was placed in the centre of eye shell. Flasking and dewaxing of the sclera shell were done after placing a layer of wax over it. The characterization of the eye was completed using floccules and artist's oil paints (Camlin, Mumbai, India) or red color silk thread, simulating the capillaries which were glued to the sclera portion of the shell and packing of the mold was done with clear acrylic (DENTSPLY, USA). After curing, the prosthesis was finished and polished. Thus, the custom-made eye prosthesis can be made [Figure 3]b.{Figure 1}{Figure 2}{Figure 3}

Custom made eye prostheses provide more esthetic and precise result when compared to stock eye prosthesis. The commonly available materials and simple technique described in this article make it more ease and cost-effective to fabricate it.
